A Prayer to Check the Plank in My Own Eye | Your Daily Prayer

Jesus answers that instinct with one of the most unforgettable images in the Sermon on the Mount.

A person notices a tiny speck in someone else’s eye...

while a giant plank is sticking out of their own.

In today’s Your Daily Prayer, Lia Girard reflects on Matthew 7:3-5 and the humility required to examine our own hearts before criticizing someone else.

This doesn’t mean Christians should ignore harmful behavior.

It doesn’t mean discernment is wrong.

And it doesn’t mean we should never confront sin or set boundaries.

But Jesus does challenge the posture from which we do those things.

Before asking:

“What’s wrong with them?”

we may need to ask:

“God, what am I missing in myself?”

That matters especially when conversations turn toward gossip, public criticism, social media outrage, or the temptation to join a crowd tearing someone down.

Jesus’ order is important:

First, deal honestly with your own heart.

Then you may be able to see clearly enough to help someone else.

🙏 Today’s Prayer:

“Jesus, when I’m quick to notice someone else’s fault, slow me down. Show me where pride, resentment, hypocrisy, or insecurity may be distorting my vision. Give me humility to examine myself first and wisdom to respond to others with truth and mercy.”
