Why are many called if only few are chosen? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter
Jesus said, “Many are called but few are chosen.” This statement appears at the end of the Parable of the Wedding Feast. The parable illustrates God’s persistent calling to those who could become true disciples of Jesus.
The first invitation was offered through Jesus’ ministry to Israel. The nation rejected him. The second invitation was extended at Pentecost by the apostles. The nation continued to reject him. The third invitation went out to the Gentiles, beginning with Cornelius. Here is where the call, the invitation flourished.
This call involves great responsibility. Discipleship requires self-denial, sacrifice and transformation, all for the purpose of being trained to bless the rest of the world in God’s future kingdom. Like the wedding guests in the parable, the called are required to wear the garment provided. Those called must be “clothed” in Christ’s righteousness.
