Ruth 2:1-23 | IT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT — You Thought It Was Random… God Was Setting You Up

There is something in YOUR life right now that looks like a coincidence.

A door that closed. A turn YOU did not plan. A moment YOU chalked up to bad timing or dumb luck. And YOU have already filed it away as random — something that just happened to YOU, with no meaning attached to it. But what if the thing YOU dismissed as an accident was the most deliberate moment God has authored in YOUR life so far?

Ruth 2 opens on a woman with nothing left.

Her husband, gone. Her father-in-law, gone. Her brother-in-law, gone. She is a foreigner in a town where she knows no one, living with an aging mother-in-law and no provision on the table. She had prayed. She had grieved. And none of it put food in that house.

Then she said seven words that changed the entire course of redemptive history — and they were not a prayer.

Here is what almost no one realizes: God never directed one single step Ruth took while she was sitting down.

She walked out that door with no plan, no connections, and no idea whose land she was walking onto. And the text does something strange at that exact moment. It says her steps just happened to bring her to one particular field — out of every field in that entire region. The original wording there is one of the most quietly explosive phrases in the whole book, and once YOU see what it actually means, YOU will never read a "coincidence" in YOUR own life the same way again.

Because the owner of that field was not a random landowner.

He was the one man in that city with the legal standing to redeem everything she had lost — and she had no idea. She thought she was gathering leftovers. God was arranging a bloodline that would run all the way to the Messiah.

And then comes the part almost no one talks about. Jesus gave a three-part command in Matthew 7, and two-thirds of it is action. Most people never get past the first third. They pray. They fast. They wait. And they call it faith while the field God assigned to them sits down the street, harvested by somebody else.

The enemy does not bark at parked cars. If he is barking at YOU right now, that is confirmation YOU are moving toward something.

So what was Ruth doing that YOU are not? And what has to happen before God can start ordering YOUR steps?
