Chris Tomlin Reimagines a 1,800 Year Old Hymn — And It Connects Us to the Earliest Church
Before denominations, before church buildings, before the Council of Nicaea — there was a song. A fragile scrap of papyrus discovered in the Egyptian desert holds what is believed to be the earliest known Christian hymn, dating back to the third century. Grammy Award-winning worship leader Chris Tomlin was so moved when he first saw it that he felt compelled to bring it to life for today’s Church. Collaborating with Australian songwriter Ben Fielding, Tomlin reimagined this ancient text into a modern worship song featured on his album The King Is Still the King — and the journey is now a feature-length documentary called “The First Hymn,” in theaters March 24 and 26. Tomlin says it best: “To think that we’re singing something that 1,800 years ago was being sung — it connects us to the early Church.”
