Doug Wilson & Catholic Salvation | Pastor Patrick Hines Podcast

In this powerful episode of the Pastor Patrick Hines Podcast, Pastor Hines directly confronts Doug Wilson's controversial statements on Catholic salvation—specifically addressing whether prominent Catholic figures like G.K. Chesterton and J.R.R. Tolkien could be saved while holding to Roman Catholic doctrine. Pastor Hines delivers a clear, Scripture-saturated defense of sola fide (justification by faith alone). Drawing from Galatians 2:21, Galatians 5:1-4, Romans 3, Ephesians 2:8-9, and more, he explains why trusting in a false gospel (one that mixes faith with works, sacraments, or human effort) cannot save. He critiques Wilson's position as dangerously close to universalism and exposes the errors of Federal Vision theology, which blurs the line between justification and sanctification.

What you'll learn:

Why Catholic teaching on mortal sin, purgatory, and justification contradicts the biblical gospel. How true saving faith produces fruit without earning salvation.

Why Chesterton, Tolkien, and similar voices promoted a defective gospel.

The difference between fellowship with God and the once-for-all imputation of Christ's righteousness

This is essential listening for anyone wrestling with Roman Catholicism, Doug Wilson's theology, or the purity of the gospel in today's church.

Douglas James Wilson (b. 1953) is an American conservative Reformed and evangelical Christian theologian and pastor. Wilson leads Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, in which capacity he has taken leading roles in the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches and the classical Christian education movement. He is a public proponent of postmillennialism, Christian nationalism, covenant theology, and biblical patriarchy.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton KC*SG (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English Christian apologist writer. Chesterton's wit, paradoxical style, and defence of tradition made him a dominant figure in early 20th-century literature.

Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and wrote on apologetics, such as his works Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an orthodox Christian and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting from high church Anglicanism. Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Newman and John Ruskin.
