Pan-Psychism Is Coming: How Should Christians Respond? - David McIlroy
New Atheism ran out of steam because of its inability to answer the questions of meaning and purpose. Europeans are increasingly happy to describe themselves as “spiritual” and to say things like “the universe told me” or “the universe wants me to do this”. These ideas can be framed as pan-psychism (the belief that everything is conscious) or as panentheism (the belief that God is in everything). Contemporary intellectual inspiration for these ideas is offered by Iain McGilchrist, Philip Goff, Thomas Nagel, and others. This talk explores their ideas and consider how Christians can understand this movement and more effectively communicate the Gospel.

David McIlroy is a practising barrister in the UK and Ireland. He is a Global Distinguished Professor at the University of Notre Dame (USA) in England. He is convinced that justice matters enormously to God, and that God wants Christians to work hard to see justice done more and more in situations around the world. Through his books (A Biblical View of Law and Justice; A Trinitarian Theology of Law; The End of Law; Ransomed, Redeemed, and Forgiven: Money and the Atonement), his website www.theologyoflaw.org, and many articles, David seeks to deepen people’s reflections on justice and to inspire others to take up the challenge of acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God (Micah 6:8).
